Ford ended production in December 2025, saying the business case for the truck had eroded. Ford's website now says the truck can no longer be ordered in its current form. Buyers today are choosing from remaining dealer stock or the used market. Ford plans a next-generation Lightning as an extended-range electric truck with a petrol generator, but has not announced launch timing. Design & Interior The Lightning looks much like a regular F-150, which many truck buyers see as a plus. The crew cab is spacious, with generous room for adults in both rows. Higher trims have a 15.5-inch portrait touchscreen and Ford's BlueCruise hands-free highway driving system. Edmunds praises how well the technology is integrated. The large front trunk adds lockable storage that a petrol F-150 lacks. Driving Power is strong, with 452 hp from the standard battery and 580 hp from the extended-range battery. Edmunds recorded about 4 seconds from 0 to 60 mph in a Platinum, remarkably quick for a full-size truck. The ride is comfortable for a pickup. Edmunds notes the body can feel soft and wallowy over large bumps. Range & Charging EPA ratings are 240 miles for the standard battery and 300–320 miles for the extended-range battery. Edmunds achieved 332–345 miles in real-world testing with the extended-range pack, beating the EPA estimates. Efficiency is low, at 66–72 MPGe, reflecting the truck's size and weight. Towing is the Lightning's main weakness, because range can fall by up to half with a heavy trailer. Edmunds measured DC fast charging at about 304–316 miles of range added per hour. That is adequate, but slower than the quickest-charging EVs. Practicality Edmunds lists a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds and a maximum payload of 2,235 pounds. Ford's Pro Power Onboard system provides outlets for running tools and appliances from the battery. The front trunk and the familiar F-150 bed make it a genuinely useful work vehicle. Buyers who tow long distances should consider whether the reduced towing range suits them. Safety NHTSA gives the 2025 Lightning five stars overall, with four stars for frontal crash and rollover and five for side impact. The IIHS rated the updated moderate overlap front test Poor, mainly because of weak protection for the rear passenger. Front crash prevention and seat belt reminders were rated Good, headlights Acceptable and LATCH anchors Marginal. The Lightning holds no IIHS Top Safety Pick award. It was not sold in Australia and has no ANCAP rating. Verdict The Lightning shows how well an electric powertrain can suit a full-size pickup. It is fast, comfortable and practical, and it can double as a mobile power source. The main drawbacks are high list prices, heavy range loss when towing and a Poor IIHS moderate overlap result. With production over, it now makes most sense as a discounted remaining-stock or used purchase.
